Engine oil is crucial for the engine to function properly. To ensure its longevity, optimal performance and to prevent the engine from seizing up, it is important to change it regularly. It should be changed after 15,000–20,000 kilometres or in accordance with the intervals specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
To choose the right type of oil, it is advisable to follow the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions. The different types of oil are then categorised according to the vehicle’s performance class under ACEA or API specifications. This classification primarily determines whether the oil is suitable for petrol or diesel engines. The manufacturer also specifies the SAE viscosity grade, which varies according to winter and summer grades.
The oil in an automatic gearbox must be changed regularly after every 60,000–80,000 km or every 4 years. Automatic gearboxes are known to be more sensitive to the quality and cleanliness of the oil than the engine.
Shock absorbers ensure the car’s stability and the tyres’ grip on the road. Over time, their effectiveness diminishes, so it is important to monitor wear and tear on the shock absorbers. The risks associated with worn shock absorbers include poor handling, insufficient grip of the car on the road when cornering, and an increased braking distance. Similarly, a worn-out vehicle chassis reduces ride comfort. It is recommended to have them checked every 80 thousand kilometres.
The service life of a car battery is around 5 years, though this depends on how often the vehicle is used. Prolonged periods of inactivity are not good for the battery’s service life.
It is recommended that you check the condition of the brake fluid regularly and change it at least once every two years.
